Solid-state drives have been available for several years now and offer a significant advantage in terms of access speed over conventional hard drives. Installing the Windows 7 operating system on an SSD can significantly improve boot times, but it is important to realize that the way SSDs work differs from conventional hard drives. SSDs Can Read and Write Pages:

While SSDs can read and write pages, they can only delete entire blocks. windows  On a disk that is used correctly, there will be many ‘dirty’ blocks. Where some pages are useful and others are available for overwriting. The disk must first copy all pages of data in a block to the cache. Delete the block, and then rewrite the data. This can ultimately lead to degradation of performance.

Windows 7 supports a TRIM command that removes dirty blocks by deleting the blocks that contain files that have been deleted and rewriting the valid data when the delete command is received.

Be sure to set your storage configuration mode to AHCI in the BIOS so that all SATA functions work properly before installing Windows 7 on your SSD to improve performance. You can then run TRIM manually using the Intel Toolbox application.

SSDs Use and Clean up Dirty Data:

SSDs use idle time to do housework and clean up dirty data. So it’s important that Windows does not turn off your drive after a certain amount of time. To check this, go to Control Panel, System and Security, Power Settings. ‘Change Schedule Settings’ in the balanced profile, click on’ Change Advance Power Settings’, expand ‘Hard Disk’ and make sure ‘Switch Hard Disk After’ is set to ‘ Never ‘.

A few other options to check are:

Check if Disk Defragmenter is disabled – This can reduce SSD performance if enable. Right-click on the SSD in the ‘Computer’ menu and select ‘Properties’, then ‘Tools’ and ‘Defragment Now’. windows  From here you can disable defragmentation and any schedules.

Drive indexing must also be disabled. Right-click on a drive, ‘properties’ under the ‘General’ tab.

Disable ‘Super Fetch’, right-click on ‘Computer’, ‘Administration’, ‘Services and Applications’, ‘Services’, ‘Superfetch’ and set ‘Startup Type’ to ‘Disabled’.
